Elizabeth’s Journey Continues in London!

Ok so sometimes as parents we live out lives vicariously through our children and this last weekend, my wife and I did that thanks to Elizabeth! As I wrote last week or so, Elizabeth is spending  four weeks studying in the homeland of her Browne, Laird and McCloskey ancestors! Well this past weekend was a free weekend and she discovered that it would only cost her 50 euros to go to London so along with a girlfriend she went to London. She spent two days sighting-seeing while staying in a hostel.  She sure looks homesick to me, eh? Here are some other shots of London.

Like Ireland, Elizabeth has ancestors from England on her mother’s side and on my side. On her mother’s side she has the Payne’s, Sarah Ann married James Browne and then there arethe Johnsons and Coopers on Sarah’s mother’s side. The family’s all lived in London’s east end in Wapping and St. George in the East with George Johnson being a boatman on the Thames!

Now my mother’s roots go back to Lincolnshire and mostly in Holbeach. My 4th great-grandfather the first of four John Sherrington Ashtons was born in Holbeach in 1814. He was the son of Thomas Asthon and Mary Sherrington they were married in Kirkby on Bain in 1810! This may be the church they were married in.

But alas, Elizabeth’s trip will come to an end this weekend as she heads home on Sunday.  Now you know that all this talk about England and London brings to mind only one song… Roger Miller’s “England Swings”. Here’s a video with some more pictures of London!
