This Day in History – Jan 2, 1890 – Alice Sanger a new staffer appears at the White House – 1962 The Weavers don't appear on Jack Paar!!

On this date in 1890 – let’s see that’s 124 years ago……President Benjamin Harrison appointed Alice Sanger as the first female member of the White House Staff.. From History.com

During an otherwise uneventful presidency remarkable only for allowing Congress a free-for-all in spending public funds, Alice Sanger’s appointment may have been an olive branch to the growing women’s suffrage movement that had gathered momentum during Harrison’s presidency. In 1890, two of the most influential organizations involved in the women’s suffrage movement, the American Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman Suffrage Association, combined forces and became the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). NAWSA represented a coalition of women’s suffrage activists, social reformers and temperance advocates. Their demands included stronger female property rights, employment and educational opportunities for women, improved divorce and child custody laws and reproductive freedom. Read More read more

Edward goes to Genealogy Bank and discovers some interesting family history!!

So it all started very innocently the other night, after I read in Walter Trout’s biography, that he was from Ocean City, NJ. Hey, I said to my wife, “I may be related to Walter Trout since I did have Trout relatives that lived in Atlantic City”. My Trout-Corson line goes back to the early 1800’s in the Cape May and Atlantic County area!! Anyway, my wife said that I should check out Genealogy Bank for recent obituaries. That started it – I went and looked at some obituaries and didn’t see anything and then I decided to put in the search John Trout who was my last known ancestor t o live in that area. What popped up was this article from 1863! John Trout death   Now this John Trout is my great-great grandfather Mark Trout’s brother. Well at least I think it is – my John Trout was listed as a Pilot in the 1860 census, and since there were no planes to pilot a steamboat would seem to be what he piloted. He also left two sons when he died in the same year and month as this article!! So I think it’s a pretty safe assumption that he is Mark’s brother!! Anyway, the point is it does help bring my ancestor to life – well not to life in this case, but at least a real person, who left a wife and two sons! After this find, I went on to put a variety of other names in to the Genealogy Bank search engine and I found quite a bit of new information, marriages, some deaths and otherwise interesting stuff. One of the names I put in was my maternal grandmother’s name Regars. What came up surprised me! Several newspaper articles came up about my grandmother Elva Regars It appears that she was very active in the Junior League of the Union Methodist Episcopal Church in Burlington. Here, an eleven year old Alva (Elva) is part of the musical Christmas entertainment at the Church on New Years Day! This is the same grandmother that I have memories of her giving me a sip of her beer as we sat in the dining area of the Bar on Broad Street in Beverly and the many times we had to pick her up at the Happy Bar in Beverly….. I always say it was the McCloskey’s that did in the Ashton’s!! Epworth 1915 - Elva Regars Piano and Vocal   Finally their was an article about a distant relative young eleven year old, Elmer Campbell {named after my 3rd great-grandfather) who had this experience……… Elmer Campbell - train fire   I know it’s hard to read but the gist of the story is that young eleven year old Elmer was playing with his electric trains with a tumbler of auto antifreeze next to him, when he picked up one of the cars a spark ignited the fumes over the antifreeze sending flames over his clothes. At the hospital he was in serious but not critical condition! Anyway these articles and several others helped to bring my ancestors and relatives alive! In just the few hours that I’ve spent on-line, I can see that Ancestry.com, Genealogy Bank and Family Search have more databases on-line, than the last time I’ve worked on my family tree, so I guess in 2014 I have to really explore those databases and see if I can find some of my ancestors that I say were in the “Witness Protection Program” – LOL!! read more

The Safari explores the “Hydrosphere” courtesy of Divine Matrix

So this afternoon,  I received an email from Echoes, that included the top 25 albums for the month of December 2013.  The album at number 9 was Hydrosphere by Divine Matrix. Since I deal all the time with things related to the hydrosphere, i.e. wetlands, storm water regulations, I thought it was a good album for me. Not that the album really had anything to do with those things the theme of the album is obviously water! The album was the second electronic ambient album that I listened to today. The first album was Jeff Greinke’s album Cities in Fog 1 & 2. Greinke’s album is a lot darker than  Hydrosphere. Overall, I like Hydrosphere better because of its  mellower  mood. read more

From Riverside New Jersey and the Karn Family – Merry Christmas to All!!

DieEd

So when I was growing up I had a handmade stocking that had my name Eddie stitched at the top of the stocking. The stocking unfilled is shown on the left. Now several years ago we found the stocking and it was hung with the rest of the family stockings on Christmas Eve. It didn’t take long for son Nicholas to notice that the stocking had a strange message on it when it was hung the opposite way! Not the exact message that you want to send on Christmas!!

Anyway Christmas has always been a hectic time at the Karn house, shopping for four kids was always coupled with last-minute painting, plastering and cleaning!! Hell, it wasn’t Christmas unless the house was torn apart up until the last-minute!! read more

Me, Myself and Family….. Eli’s Coming and Going! Oh My……..

For her birthday this year, our daughter Elizabeth’s boyfriend Jimmy bought her a kitten, She originally wanted an all black cat, but when she went to the pet store she couldn’t pass up this cute little kitty…..

Eli

Elllie2

So Eli came home with her and eventually back to her apartment in Delaware. Eli had been fixed only a few days prior to Elizabeth adopting him and last week he developed a sore around one of the stitches and wouldn’t leave it alone. So Elizabeth took him to the Vet. On her way there Elizabeth had this premonition that the vet would tell her that Eli was actually a girl cat, This had happened to us years ago when Abigail and Lucy went to the vet and came home James and Fenwick!! It wasn’t long after arriving at the vet’s office that Elizabeth was informed by the technician that Eli appeared her to be a girl cat a fact that was shortly confirmed by the Vet!! So Eli became Ellie and to protect her from getting the sore infected she was given a cone, not one of those normal cone but an extra special fancy model…… read more

Symphonic Prog from Armenia’s Oaksenham!

Yesterday among my “Just for You” recommendations at MOG was  the album Conquest of  the Pacific from the band Oaksenham. The album was released in 2006 and was recommended because I had listened to Kerrs Pink and Dead Heroes Club.Since I had enjoyed both of those bands,  I read the info  about the band. When I read that they were Armenian the hunt became more interesting!  So  I downloaded  the album to the iPhone and what I found was some great symphonic prog-rock!  The highlight for me was the flute! Some background from their website: read more

Yesterday in Music -Nov 14, 1977 – Derek Gripper is born and the Safari discovers the Music of Mali!!

Last night the tiredness of the last now three days of work caught up with me and I was unable to complete this post …….

So tonight I was reviewing the list of jazz musician birthdays on November 14th and a name that caught my attention was guitarist Derek Gripper, who was born on today’s date in 1977. I read in his biography at All About Jazz that….

Derek Gripper is a composer and guitarist from the Western Cape of South Africa, merging “the imagery and mystery of the rural areas of the Cape” with the techniques of classical guitar and the string music of Africa (uhadi bow, umrhubhe, kora, guitar). Derek calls this new evolution of music New Cape describing it as a “rethinking of the Cape’s transcultural heritage.” read more

The Safari Travels to Poetry Texas and takes that Last Train to Amsterdam – Happy Birthday Ray Wylie Hubbard!!

Cross-posted from Me, Myself, Music and Mysteries.

Today was a very hard day out in the field lugging around the nuclear density gauge to test the density of the backfill being placed, above the pipe and below Tuckerton Road, during the emergency repair of the dam at Sioux Lake. And right now it hurts to even TYPE, and my mind well it’s gone to sleep well before the rest of my body!! But I’ll try to write something and any errors can be blamed on my tiredness!!

Ray Wylie 4On this date in 1946 on of my favorite Texas Music artist/Americana Artist Ray Wylie Hubbard was born. Now like Booker T  and :”Green Onions” in my music world Ray Wylie is usually associated with one song….. “Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother”! The Safari Re-discovers the Progressive Bluegrass of Lansing’s Lindsey Lou and the Flatbellys!

Ok so today the Safari travels Michigan and rediscovers a band that I first listened to about a year ago Lindsey Lou and the Flatbellys.  From their website:

Hailing from all corners of the Great Lakes State of Michigan, Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys are giving a nod to American traditional music, while boldy taking their own songs in new directions.  Distinct vocals, tight harmonies, instrumental expertise, and creative arrangements are all essential characteristics of their unique sound.  The group focuses on the original tunes of Lindsay Lou Rilko, which include true-life tales of bank-robbing aunties, moonshinin’ grandpas, and celebrations of love, life, and nature. It’s an infectious vibe that could only have been born in the heart of America’s Fresh Coast! Full Bio. read more
