Life’s Soundtrack – Cryptic Vision – Moments of Clarity

So last Tuesday I had a good run. I averaged under 10 minute per mile pace over the 4.2 mile course the soundtrack for the run was the 2004 release from Cryptic Vision Moments of Clarity. Cryptic Vision is  a progressive rock band from Sarasota Florida. The band was formed in 2003 by multi-instrumentalist/producer Rick Duncan and vocalist Todd Plan. I don’t know if I  got the whole story or not. I do know boy found girl, boy lost girl and his faith. Overall both the music and vocals were, in my humble opinion, very good. But then again what do I know. All I know is what I like and I like Cryptic Vision’s music. It kept me interested and moving throughout my run. read more

Prog Explorations: Shadow Circus – On a Dark and Stormy Night

On a Dark and Stormy NightOk so maybe I have to reconsider my approach to music listening when it comes to Prog Rock. Typically, I listen to an album and then go and find out about the artist and their music. With Prog Rock I think it is most time wise to visit their site and read about the album BEFORE listening! You see many prog rock artist don’t create songs, they create albums many times concept albums and even when it’s not a concept album the tracks often are based on something!! This became clear with my latest listen, On a Dark and Stormy Night from the band Shadow Circus. Now if I had read Madeleine L’Engle’s classic fantasy novel, A Wrinkle in Time. I would have known that the title of the album is actually from the book and that would have given me a clue that the album is based on the book. Anyway on the first several listens, I enjoyed the music, after going to Wikipedia and reading a synopsis of the book I went back and listened to the album again I liked it even more! Life’s Soundtrack – ARZ’s Turn of the Tide makes the miles go by!

Turn of the TideWow, two runs in three days! A first for 2013! Tonight I decided that the run would be 4 miles, but I didn’t want it to a run that I usually do, because then I start comparing my times now, with past runs and start thinking, I am old and slow! Anyway, I laid out a 4 mile course slightly different then normal – hey how much can I change it up in a one square mile town!! While it wasn’t the easiest four mile run ever, it really wasn’t, too bad considering how little I’ve run this winter. A not so good day – but some good music from Progression by Failure

POk so obviously the problem I had yesterday i.e. no power to my computer has not been resolved. it is clear from the fact that I am writing my first post of the day at 11:20 pm! Of course it didn’t help that I somehow wiped out this website this morning and when it was restored this afternoon it was restored back to March 8th! Edward Meets More ProgRock – Italy’s Elvenking – ERA

So now that I’ve listened to many prog-rock, metal albums on MOG, several albums usually appear on the list of albums “just for me”. So there right next to folk and blues albums are these prog rock albums. Well yesterday, I listened to one of the albums ERA by Elvenking and I really liked it! I’ve written before that it amazes me that prog-rock/metal music is such a world-wide music phenomena and Elvenking reflects that geographical diversity. Exploring Prog Rock – Anubis – A Tower of Silence

Yesterday I noted that at number  8 on the ProgArchives list of best albums over the last few years is A Tower Of Silence by the Australian neo-prog band Anubis. I gave it a quick listen and it sounded like something I would like, so I put it on the iPhone and gave it a more thorough listen this morning. I put it on as I was shopping in Target this morning and I really liked what I heard. We had been in the store for about 40 minutes or so we were ready to leave so I thought I’d check as to where I was on the album – I was all the way to track FOUR! I hadn’t noticed that the opening track “The Passing Bell” – was in typical ProgRock fashion was over 17 minutes long! read more

Exploring ProgRock – The King of Number 33 – DeeExpus

So this evening I decided to check out some newer Prog Rock than early 70s Genesis and Gentle Giant. Now there’s nothing wrong with either of those bands, I just want to check out the new stuff, too. So I went back to the Prog Archives and looked at the list of Best ProgRock albums of 2010-11 and 12, because the album at number 7 King of Number 33 was released in 2012 and is the second release from DeeExpus.

DeeExpus hails from North East England. Andy Ditchfield formed the DeeExpus, when he decided to turn his long time solo project into a full-time band. The first member of DeeExpus beside Ditchfield was a former school band mate of Ditchfield Tony Wright. After a chance encounter Ditchfield and Wright wanted to form a band. They found that they both worked so well together. So they just put together their first album Halfway Home. They used just a few guest artists to help them out. After the success of that album they did put a band together, recorded a live CD Then They and went to work on the second album, The King of Number 33, which is the one I listened to tonight. read more

Into the Night – With Genesis – “The Knife”

So yesterday I started my prog-rock education, I decided to start with one of the first Prog-rock bands Genesis. My sons Nick and Andrew always tell me to listen to them, So I started with their first Prog-rock album Trespass, which was their second overall album. I had it on in the background as I was working and it sounded pretty good to me.

Then I went and looked it up on AllMusic and they only gave it two stars! The review said that the only song that made it to future shows from the album was “Knife”. read more

Life’s Soundtrack: A Great Run with a Great Soundtrack from Halestorm!

So the owner of the company that I work has started running, and over the last few weeks we have compared our four mile times. Both of our times have gone down over those weeks. At the end of last week I was feeling good, I came close to breaking 38 minutes over four miles, when I told him, he said “I beat you 37:25!”  Of course he concedes that his running may be a little easier because it’s on the treadmill under perfect conditions! Anyway his times have spurred me on and today I ran one of the fastest times over one of my toughest courses. I hit the first mile in 9:17 and held that pace throughout the run, including the climb up Pancoast! I crossed my four mile point in 36:51, and finished the entire 4.2 mile run in 39:09! Looking back through my workouts it’s probably the fastest I’ve run over that course in the last two years!!  The good thing is that I feel good after the run! read more
