Life’s Soundtrack – A Decent Run made better by Bulgaria’s Pantommind!

After coming home from food shopping at Trader Joe’s this afternoon, I came within an eyelash of talking myself out of going for a run! I’ve done that successfully for most of April, between long days and knees that really didn’t feel 100%. But I told myself no, you are going to run. I thought maybe if I go to Runner’s World and create a new route then at least it’s different and then I really can’t compare it to familiar runs! So that’s what I did and overall the run was pretty good the first mile was under 10 minutes and overall I averaged about 10:13 minutes per mile, and considering that I haven’t really run that much this month I’m okay with the pace!PShade of FateThe soundtrack for the run was the latest album from Pantommind, Shade of Fate. Prog Exploration Goes to France and finds Delusion Squared II

Delusion Squared IISo I’ve written before, that one of the things I like about Prog Rock is that the bands come from all over the world. The band that was the soundtrack for my ride down to the Garden State Parkway was the French band Delusion Squared. The album is their sophomore release appropriately titled II The band, formed in 2009, is a trio composed of lead vocalist and guitarist, Lorraine Young, guitarist, keyboard and drummer – Steven Francis and bassist/keyboardist – Emmanuel de Saint Meen. Their music can be classified as Crossover Prog (or Art Rock). If you are a novice to the world of progressive rock, you can go here, for the ProgArchives definition of Crossover Prog! read more

Life’s Soundtrack: Greylevel – Hypostatic Union

Hypostatic Union

So it does bode well for a run when within the first quarter-mile you start thinking to yourself, “You know my legs don’t feel very good, maybe I should just go back home”, which is exactly what happened today! But I kept going and turned inward and tried to concentrate on the music, which was provided by a progressive rock band from the west coast of Canada, Greylevel and their 2011 release Hypostatic Union. I passed the first mile mark in just under 10 minutes and my heart rate was too bad. Then it was up Pancoast Avenue, to the beats in second song on the album. After reaching the top of the climb it was downhill to Bridgeboro, all to the great sound that Greylevel crafts. The band calls it  ” a unique blend of progressive and emotional rock music”.GreylevelGreylevel started as a solo studio project for Derek Barber a vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, In 2005 Barber teamed with guitarist and bassist Richard Shukin and vocalist Esther Barber (Derek’s wife) to form a real band.  Since then Greylevel has developed into a full-fledged band. read more

Life’s Soundtrack – RPWL and Todd Snider!

TAWKI-cover-300Ok so yesterday we had a family gathering to celebrate Easter and Andrew’s 31 birthday, which is today. Anyway about midway through the day, Andrew went upstairs and came down with three albums by RPWL which I mentioned in the other days post about Blind Ego! So on the way down to the job site at milepost 53.9 on the Garden State Parkway, I listened to a mix of RPWL and enjoyed their music. I’ll write more after I’ve listened to the albums a few more times.

On the way back, I had a mix of my entire library on and a Todd Snider song came on from his album of Jerry Jeff cover’s Time as We Know It, the “Continuing Saga of the Classic Bummer Or Is This My One Way Bus Ticket to Cleveland” and I began to sing along…. now that’s what I miss when I listen to ProgRock it not really  sing along type music….anyway here’s what Todd says about the album read more

Life’s Soundtracks:The run was a struggle but the music from Day Six was great!

Day sixSo some days you really look forward to your run, you start, you feel good and the run goes very smoothly. Then there are other days, well, they don’t go as well. Saturdays area often a slow day for me. I work all day at Lippincott and then at Target not getting done until 11:15 plus! Yesterday the day went from 7:15 to 11:15, so overall today this 61 year-old body was moving kind of slow! So this afternoon when I just felt like taking a nap I did some kundalini yoga trying to wake me up, and it worked so I got motivated enough to run, went out and discovered that it was a lot colder and windy than I thought it was, anyway, I put on another layer of clothes and set out. I had created a new four mile course and the start looped around a little, so that, after just a little bit a left turn would have led me back home, which was where I really wanted to go or a right turn would set me on my way into the fourteen mile an hour wind and the first leg of my four mile run. Now the only thing good about heading into the wind on the first two miles of a run is that the wind is at your back on the way back!! That’s what happened and really the only reason that I was able to finish the run! The other thing that got me through the run was the music, as always! The music was from a prog rock band Day Six and their album The Grand Design. So with the wind at my back for half of the run, I made it through with an overall pace of about 10:05 per mile, so overall it was not a bad run! read more

Life’s Soundtrack – Cryptic Vision – Moments of Clarity

Cryptic Visidn - Momonets-of-Clarity
Cryptic Vision – Heavy Prog – United States

So last Tuesday I had a good run. I averaged under 10 minute per mile pace over the 4.2 mile course the soundtrack for the run was the 2004 release from Cryptic Vision Moments of Clarity. Cryptic Vision is  a progressive rock band from Sarasota Florida. The band was formed in 2003 by multi-instrumentalist/producer Rick Duncan and vocalist Todd Plan. I don’t know if I  got the whole story or not. I do know boy found girl, boy lost girl and his faith. Overall both the music and vocals were, in my humble opinion, very good. But then again what do I know. All I know is what I like and I like Cryptic Vision’s music. It kept me interested and moving throughout my run. read more

Life’s Soundtrack – ARZ’s Turn of the Tide makes the miles go by!

Turn of the TideWow, two runs in three days! A first for 2013! Tonight I decided that the run would be 4 miles, but I didn’t want it to a run that I usually do, because then I start comparing my times now, with past runs and start thinking, I am old and slow! Anyway, I laid out a 4 mile course slightly different then normal – hey how much can I change it up in a one square mile town!! While it wasn’t the easiest four mile run ever, it really wasn’t, too bad considering how little I’ve run this winter. The pace was just slightly over 10 minutes per mile, which I’ll take at this point in time! read more

Life’s Soundtrack: A Great Run with a Great Soundtrack from Halestorm!

So the owner of the company that I work has started running, and over the last few weeks we have compared our four mile times. Both of our times have gone down over those weeks. At the end of last week I was feeling good, I came close to breaking 38 minutes over four miles, when I told him, he said “I beat you 37:25!”  Of course he concedes that his running may be a little easier because it’s on the treadmill under perfect conditions! Anyway his times have spurred me on and today I ran one of the fastest times over one of my toughest courses. I hit the first mile in 9:17 and held that pace throughout the run, including the climb up Pancoast! I crossed my four mile point in 36:51, and finished the entire 4.2 mile run in 39:09! Looking back through my workouts it’s probably the fastest I’ve run over that course in the last two years!!  The good thing is that I feel good after the run! read more

Life’s Soundtrack – Another strong run with music from Joanne Shaw Taylor!

So I came home a little early tonight so that I could get in a run , before we went to see my mom. I decided to run a nice easy 4 mile out and back. The course is a variation on my regular out and back run, the start of the run is different, so I looked at the course on Runner’s World before i went, to see were the turn around point was, I ran the first mile in 9:28 when I crossed  the second mile  and looked at my watch and saw 20:22, and I knew I went a little too far! So that moved the 3rd mile mark but the last mile was 9:52 which wasn’t bad. Overall the 4.2 mile course was completed in 41:32 for an average pace of 9:55 still an improvement over last two months! A slight difference I couldn’t find any running tights so I ran without and right now my legs feel good, we’ll see tomorrow, but last time I ran without them the pain in my knee was immediate! read more

Life’s Soundtrack – A decent run, music provided by Mark Cutler!

So it was a little warm tonight but not too bad, I could have made it an excuse not to run , but I didn’t! I am still slow as hell, but at least I made four miles tonight! My time was like 10:10 pace per mile through the first two miles and then I got slower and slower, I still ended up at 10:26 pace, which was the pace I ran on the last run, but the good thing was that tonight’s run was longer! Now if I can just keep it up and get another run in this week maybe I can start making some improvement!  The soundtrack for tonight’s run was an album that I saw on the FAR Chart last night  tied for 22 with, would you believe 22 other albums, Sweet Pain by Mark Cutler. A little background from his webpage… read more
