New Friends – Cornmeal!

So the other day, when I was looking up information about Great American Taxi I saw a new music chart at Jambands.com and on that chart at No4 was a band called Cornmeal and their new album Live in Chicago,Il., Vol.1. So I wentto Rhapsody to check them out. Rhapsody didn’t have have the new album but did have several others including their 2006 release Feet First. After the first few minutes of the first song “River Gap”, I knew I had another progressive bluegrass band to add to my growing list of new favorites!  These guys and gal are absolutely fantastic! The vocals are great, and the picking is some of the fastest and best I have ever heard! Here is some information about the band from their biography at their website: read more

Thursday Musical – Part 1 – Sarah and Ernie

So today was one of those days when I listened to several different albums. The musical day started as I drove out to the Vincentown Diner. On the way listened to an album that I downloaded a while ago, I Won’t Go Home Till Morning by Sarah McQuaid. I know I saw the album on one of the charts I regularly scan but I can’t remember which one! Anyway the album is very good from her website:

I Won’t Go Home ’Til Morning, the long-awaited follow-up to her acclaimed debut album When Two Lovers Meet, marked a distinct change of focus for the musician whose rich voice has been likened to “matured cognac”. Whereas her first album was a feast of Irish music, this is an enchanting celebration of old-time Appalachian folk, with Sarah’s arrangements punctuated by her own fine compositions and a cover of Bobbie Gentry’s classic ‘Ode to Billie Joe’. read more

Folk Monday – Carrie Newcomer

I started the day today listening to Carrie Newcomer’s new album Before & After. Before & After is the 12th solo album for the Indiana native and I think maybe her best work ever! The album has a little of everything and it takes more than one or two listens to take it all in. On the first listen, which actually last week the first song that really stood out to me was “Stones in the River” I just loved the symbolism of the chorus:

today I’ll drop stones into the river, read more

American Troubadours

Do you know who this is?

Ok so the other night I was reading through a book I picked up awhile ago called American Troubadours. It’s a good book with short biographies of nine folkies from the Greenwich Village scene. My questions is how many have any of you heard of?  Based on the results, I will know who I need to introduce you to! I can hear the collective, oh joys now!
